Statement of Significance

The site and memorial commemorates Boyanup's association with World War Two, and the subsequent respect of the Boyanup community.

Physical Description

Sports ground and facilities with a memorial entrance.

History

The original recreation ground in Boyanup is the site which is now occupied by the sales yards (see Ref No 142) In 1947, the Boyanup sub branch of the RSL, and the Memorial Park Committee under the chairmanship of Mr N. R. (Snowy) Payne, planned a multi-use sporting ground, developing the site with the additional purchase of land from Simmon's estate. The community support enabled the project to be realised. Opened in 1947, part of the land was purchased for the Boyanup citizens in remembrance of fallen soldiers from both world wars. The Capel Roads Board acquired the freehold of the land in 1948 for £900 which was raised by public subscription from the people of Boyanup. The first football game took place on 5 May 1947, the cricket club and hockey club opened in 1948, as well as the trotting track. In 1948, The bowling club opened in December 1949, at the same time as the six grass courts of the tennis club. The war memorial was relocated from in front of the post office to Memorial Park in 1955
