Some/Moderate Significance Contributes to the heritage of the locality. Conservation of the place is desirable if possible.

Statement of Significance

The place has a continuous association with commerce and the butchering occupation since 1912. It has significant associations with the Hurst family, and generations of Boyanup people who patronise the shop.

Physical Description

The shop is a single frontage building, only two rooms deep, with a front verandah. Timber framed and originally weatherboard clad, some of the frontage and sides have been reclad with asbestos sheets. The original skillion verandah has been concealed behind a boxed canopy which is supported by slender cylindrical columns. The corrugated iron roof has been reclad with decramastic tiles.

History

William (Bill ) Hurst slaughtered beasts on the farm, the only slaughterhouse (Abbatoirs) in the area, and began a home delivery service, receiving ice by railway and providing excellent customer service. By the time he had a shop built in 1912 he had a good customer base. It was strategically located in the town, opposite the railway station and between the Hotel and Post Office. William's sons Aubrey and Gordon ran beef cattle and Abbatoirs, with Aubrey working in the shop in 1997 it is still a butcher's shop.
