Statement of Significance

Palace Chambers is one of Kalgoorlie's finest pieces of streetscape architecture.

Physical Description

The building is two and three storeys high designed in the Federation Free Classical style and built to the pavement line with offices at the front of the building. The place was built with bricks and stone from Coolgardie and features stucco decoration and distinctive arched windows at the upper level. It originally had 16 double office suites.

The upper floor is now used for extra accommodation for the adjacent Palace Hotel. This floor is connected to the Palace Hotel by an enclosed passageway over the laneway.

History

This building was built three years after the Palace Hotel, to a design prepared by the same architects as the hotel, Porter and Thomas of Perth.

The building was constructed from stone procured from Coolgardie, and was fitted with electric lighting (Statewide Hotel Survey, 1996).
