• The school has historic value for its association with the development of the area in the early 20th century and in the post-World War era.
• The school has social value for the many members of the community who have attended the school since its construction.
• The school has aesthetic value as it demonstrates the evolution of school buildings throughout the 20th century.
Maddington Primary School is a traditional styled school with the original building constructed in 1914 but with the predominant architectural character dating from the 1950s.
The original building was extended to form a long brick range that runs parallel with Albany Highway and built in stages during the 1950s and 1960s. Further development to the rear of the earlier buildings occurred in the mid-1970s until the early 2000s.
The school presents to Albany Highway as a long brick range of brick and tile construction incorporating a long gable roof with a feature gable to the side of the entrance. The gable is clad with weatherboard which provides some relief and enlivenment to the predominantly simple brick façade. The long range is characterised by the regular placement of tall sash windows and tall chimneys creating a distinct rhythm to the front elevation.
The projecting gable section is the key element of the façade containing three sash windows positioned directly under the timbered gable. All the remaining windows along the façade are arranged in banks of two and threes.
The main entrance is located to the north of the gabled section and is recessed behind the façade creating a porch and accessed by two concrete steps.
There is a small area of parking directly in front of the school building together with lawns, mature planting and trees along the boundary creating a soft green setting to the building.
The school was established on this site in 1914 and prior to the construction of the school buildings classes were held in the Gosnells Road Board Hall in Maddington.
The school building was designed by the Public Works Department of WA, the builder of the first stage of the school has not been identified.
The school was built in response to the demands of the community which experienced rapid growth in the previous years. The school underwent various programs of work as the population increased. In the 1950s the school had significant additions as the school population grew with the increase of migrants to the Maddington district.
In the early 1970s, the East Maddington Primary School was constructed as a response to the growth in that portion of Maddington and it is now a larger school than Maddington Primary School. On the site of the Maddington Primary School is the Education Support Centre.
