Site of former Stables, Holdsworth Street, is significant as a site because it served the adjacent prison complex and/or the prison warders who lived in cottages along Holdsworth and Henderson Streets.
DEMOLISHED
Holdsworth Street was originally named Doonan Street; the change of name occurred c. 1901. Joseph Doonan was the Comptroller of the Prison and J. Doonan & Sons were also storekeepers in Adelaide Street. Lionel Holdsworth owned a large amount of land in the area and after his death in 1901 the street name was changed.
Stables are located opposite the end of Parry Street where it T-junctions with Holdsworth Street (then Doonan Rd) on the 1908 sewerage plan. Aligned with Holdsworth Street is a stone building with a timber and a brick addition. Two corrugated iron stables buildings run along the west and south boundaries of the lot. They do not appear to be associated with a residence, but are of a smaller scale than some of the commercial stables identified in the heart of the town at the time. It is likely that these stables served the adjacent prison complex and/or the prison warders who lived in cottages along Holdsworth and Henderson Streets. The site later became a carpark, before Parry Street was extended directly over the site of the former stables to meet with Norfolk Street.
