The facade is of aesthetic significance for its commanding presence in the Barrack Street streetscape. Its central position, outstanding decoration and height make it a critical unifying element in the group of buildings in which it sits.
The design of the facade is attributed to the architects Porter and Thomas, who are significant in the history of architecture in Western Australia as the designers of the Palace Hotel.
The facade represents a rare example of its stylistic type in Perth.
Three storied facade with colonnade and colosseum motif; street facade embellished with florid motifs.
A hotel was located on this site since 1847 and through that time has been known as the Commercial Hotel, Romayne’s Hotel and then the Railway Hotel. The hotel was located very close to the Fremantle to Guildford railway which was opened in 1881.
Low integrity.
Low authenticity as only the facade remains.
