The place has significant associations with the Norton family.
The Norton family came to Stirling Estate in 1908. Jim Norton had left his parent's pub in Queensland and joined the Durack's epic cattle drive across the top end of Australia. He met his wife Jane in Cue. Jim and his family settled and the children went to Stirling School. Jim bought the property near Dunkley's where Mr White had previously run a lime burner. Aboriginal worker Tommy Webb assisted him in clearing the land for farming. Jim was not a farmer, and sometimes worked at the butchers in Capel, and tried breeding horses for the Indian Army, until his stallion died. He bought Norm McTaggart's Ford and started a taxi service in Capel, but died in 1920, only 51 years old. Jane continued to farm the property to pay off debts, and prosper. During the 1930s Jane Norton took over Ted Dyers business and store in Capel, working hard before she succumbed to cancer and died, with her sons working off the debts after the store went into receivership.
