An historic site without built features. Recommend that the site is recognised by means of a plaque, place name, interpretive material, or an architectural or urban design, in due course.

Statement of Significance

The site is significant because the Rockvale homestead was the centre of communication for the settlers in the Jacob's Well area.

History

Jacob's Well was the site of an aboriginal family's dwelling. It later became a watering stop for the sandalwood cutters and the Parker family as they drove their sheep from Dangin to York for the sales. Thomas and Toolin took up the homestead block at Jacob's siding, later to be acquired by Fred (THW) Green from Beverley in 1905 (and England prior to that) In 1907 Green and his family settled on the block and produced their first crop in 1908. Harry Green handled the wheat stack. He and his wife also bought bulk vegetables from Perth and distributed them at the siding. Harry was the Railway siding caretaker, receiving and distributing goods, and also operating as the mail distribution centre: post office. In 1923 a public telephone box was installed on the front verandah of the mud bat homestead, it remained until 1936 when the telephone exchange was installed. In 1954 the property was sold and the sen/ice was transferred from Rockvale.
