The Winchester Townsite has considerable local historic significance as a former centre within the Carnamah Roads Board District. During its heyday the townsite provided important services for the local community in the way of sporting facilities, a store and the railway siding.
All that remains of the Winchester Townsite are some foundations of the tennis courts and cricket pitch and a tree where the corner store was located.
Situated at the junction of Winchester East Road No. 5 and the Midlands Road, the settlement of Winchester was once a vibrant community. It included a tennis club, a bough shed, a community hall to the south of the Winchester East Road and a corner store and cricket playing field to the north. The Winchester Railway Siding was located to the west of the Midlands Road. The community hall was originally the Billeroo School which was moved to a site next to the three tennis courts. The Winchester Tennis Club was formed in the early 1920s and disbanded in 1975 due to a lack of members. (Heydon, p7 & p59)
