Values

Drummond Cove has aesthetic significance together as an historical precinct through the vernacular design of the individual cottages, their humble scale, and the use of similar building materials. Drummond Cove is an important example of human occupation and evolution of a locality, being closely linked to the agricultural development of the inland areas of the Shire of Chapman Valley in the 1940s, Drummond Cove has social significance in its contribution to the community’s sense of place through a strong sense of social attachment, evident in the community’s desire to retain the precinct. Drummond Cove is a rare example of a previous way of life of recreational/holiday accommodation, that through rapid development and increased commercial value of coastal properties is no longer seen elsewhere in Western Australia.

Physical Description

25 single storey fibro cottages with paved road access and site serviced, aligned behind primary sand dunes. Approximately 75% of the cottages in this strip are original beach homes. Majority of homes close to original condition, some with second storey additions.

History

John Nichol Drummond took up 4000 acres of pastoral lease around a small bay north of Champion Bay in 185, becoming known as “Smugglers Cove” after ship owners began using the bay to unload contraband goods. A small stone cottage was built on the hill overlooking Smuggler’s Cove in 1870 for Drummond’s widow (P3802 Captain Drummond’s Cottage). In 1947, farmers John and Evelyn Batten of Yuna were the first of many farmers to take summer camping holidays at Smuggler’s Cove. John Batten was elected to the Upper Chapman Road Board in 1949, and the newly formed Smuggler’s Cove Committee.
