Statement of Significance

The site of the Irwin Hall and Recreation Ground has historic and social significance given its connection to the development of the Irwin Townsite.

History

The Irwin townsite’s hall was built c.1950-51 close to the Midlands Road, east of Milo Road and served the Irwin residents as a social centre for many years with dances and Christmas trees and all kinds of social functions. The recreation ground to the east of the hall was used for gymkhanas and even horse racing at times. The hall was demolished when the small township of Irwin, mainly railway employees, moved into Dongara in about 1969.
