Values

• The place is a modest example of the Post-War International style of Architecture.

• The place has been associated with the Australian Flying Corps & Royal Australian Air Force Association (RAAFA), and the adjacent Air Force Memorial Estate since its construction in 1971 and has social value as a venue for social and sporting events and gatherings for RAAFA members, Air Force Memorial Estate residents, and the local community since that time.

Physical Description

The Air Force Association Club, Bull Creek forms a part of the Air Force Memorial Estate in Bull Creek, a large 11 hectare complex comprising two residential care centres, 339 apartments and units as well as other amenities for retired Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) personnel, including an Aviation Heritage Museum. The surrounding care facilities, museum and bowling greens are not included in the curtilage of this place.

History

In May of 1929, on ANZAC day, the Australian Flying Corps Association (AFCA) WA was formed by former members of the Australian Flying Corps (AFC) to maintain the comradeship they experience in the AFC. The AFCA later evolved into the Royal Australian Air Force Association Inc (RAAFA), which has its main office in Canberra and divisions in each state. The RAAFA is registered as a private charity, is a non-for-profit organisation and is one of the largest retirement living and aged care facilities in Western Australia.
During the population boom in the post-war and 1960’s Perth, the City of Melville was developing rapidly in to the south-east, becoming a city in 1968. Although Bull Creek, a suburb in the City of Melville, contained no residences in 1965, by 1967 a small number of houses had been erected, and from the 1970’s residential development was considerable along with the associated expansion of road systems.
