Statement of Significance

The site is significant as a stopping place for travellers, and early commercial development in Mooliabeenie.

Physical Description

Remains of the brick chimney and the well site 50 metres from the shop.

History

COMMEROE'fhe well was originally a stopping point for travellers to and from Gingin. After the railway came through, Mooliabeenie was still a focus of travellers. The shop developed in response to the settlers who took up land in the area. Mooliabeenie was the opening for settlers from the Gingin district, and with a railway station, it was a busy centre. The Road Board district office was established in the area further attesting to the centrality of Mooliabeenie. A shop was originally established on Midland Railway land in Mooliabeenie, at Mr Warne Leaman's house. After it was destroyed by fire in 1922, John O'Hare established a shop. Miss Lillian Glover (now Cox) took over the shop when war was declared in 1939. Betty Read later took over, and after she married Don Read, she left the shop c1946, and it closed.
