The memorial has historical significance, commemorating Peter Chidlow and Edward Jones who contributed to the development of Morby Farm and Katrine farm in the 1830s.
The memorial is a rectangular structure, with capped pillars on the four corners. It is built of brick which has been rendered and painted white. It is a square structure approx 3m x 3m x 1.5m
When John Morrell set about developing Morby Farm in 1836, he was assisted by brothers Peter and William Chidlow. At that time relations between the settlers and local Aboriginal people were unsettled, with sporadic bouts of conflict and violence. In July 1837 Peter Chidlow and Edward Jones were working on a property, later called Katrine, when a group of Aborigines, angered by the arrest of some of their group, approached them, demanding flour and bread. A skirmish broke out and both Chidlow and Jones were speared to death. They were buried close to town, and in 1929 the present memorial was built. It is a reminder of the difficult conditions faced by the early settlers. Their death caused a period of fear and tension between the settlers and the Aboriginal people in the district.
