Statement of Significance

The shack settlements at Wedge and Grey consist of 440 vernacular shacks in two informal communities. They are significant as a rare example of squatter shack settlements associated with post-war recreation. The shacks represent a distinctive aesthetic style. The place is also significant as an Aboriginal site.

Physical Description

Wedge and Grey Shack Settlements, two informal settlements comprising a combined approximate total of 440 vernacular style shacks set along the coastal dunes.

History

The place was used as a meeting place and campsite by the Yued Aboriginal group. In the 1930s fishermen constructed shacks at Wedge Island followed by holiday maker shack at both areas in the 1950s.
