Statement of Significance

The Lido and The Lido Picture Gardens opened 1936 were important social centres for Cottesloe and s
other nearby western suburbs unfil c 1960.

Physical Description

Site of the former Lido Cabaret and Picture gardens, The Mandarin Restaurant now occupies the mostly
destroyed shell of the Lido Cabaret. A block of flats the site of the picture gardens. The original
weatherboard building - a shop run by Mrs McDonald - which stood on the site was taken to
Rockingham in 1936. The brick building constructed in 1936 had a shop at the northern end.

History

The land was owned by F.D. North. It stretched down to the parade from his home. In 1913 a weatherboard building
was erected and rented to Mrs McDonald who had a shop there. The Lido Cabaret and Picture Gardens were designed
and built by Howard Bonner for the Hatfield family in 1935. "Cottesloe is Calling" Daily News Friday Dec 20 1935
