The site represents the development of golf in the district.
At the 2nd meeting of the reformed Varley progress Association in 1965, it was decided to request land for a golf links and football ground. The resulting recreation ground was surveyed in 1966. Mr Vern Hall of Newdegate planned the 9 hole course which was constructed by the local community, mostly by "busy bees", over the ensuing 18 months. The inaugural meeting of the Varley Golf Club was held on 15 July 1969, at the completion of the course. The Club was to be officially known as the Varley Country Club. Meanwhile the Varley School was upgraded and the former school room was purchased and relocated to the golf course to become the first club house. In 1974 a new "transportable" club house was purchased. By 1978 the course was a picturesque 18 holes, and in August 1978 the inaugural Lakes Association Golf Carnival was hosted by the Varley CountryClub.
