Statement of Significance

The park and monument has historical and social significance, commemorating the arrival of the Comprehensive Water Scheme to the town and also illustrates the way in which a small town acknowledged the Bicentenary of Australia with the laying of a time capsule. The park also has aesthetic value in contributing to the streetscape.

History

During the 1988 bicentenary celebrations the park was opened (October) and a time capsule placed under the memorial. Plaque was installed on 23rd February 1996 to mark the completion of the extension of the Great Southern Water Supply Scheme, Lake Grace to Pingrup. Unveiled by the Hon. Peter Foss (MLC) Minister for the Environment.
The plaque on the drinking fountain was unveiled by the Hon. D H O'Neill (MLA) Minister for Works and water supply 4th December 1974 to mark the opening of the Pingrup Water Supply.
Other guests were R M Hillman, Director of Engineering, and T J Lewis, Under Secretary for Works.
