Statement of Significance

The place is significant as a communication centre in Lower Chittering.
Significanfi'association with Olive Sandow.

Physical Description

Timber framed and weatherboard clad with a corrugated iron roof. Formed concrete room addition.

History

The property was Sandow's 'Be le Vista". In 1918/19 Mont Sandow added to the original dwelling. The Post office was established in 1920 as a 'K' class, in a small room off the verandah. Olive Ruby Sandow was the first female to conduct: a 'K' category post office in Western Australia. She is commemorated in the Women's Memoral at Kings Perk. On 14 August 1924, it was officially made the Lower Chittering Post Office, and in 1927 became an allowance and receiving office. A small shop operated from the same room. In 1939/40. the post office, phone exchange and shop were relocated into the main dwelling in what was formerly Ihe family's sitting room. During World War Two, Olive Sandow was a key personnel in the district. Fron the 1960s, Jack Pearce operated the exchange. The phone exchange closed when the automatic exchange was introduced on 12 January 1974, after the shop had closed in 1967.
