Statement of Significance

Significant as one of three known sites in Cottesloe with Aboriginal associations.

Physical Description

Moodoorup Rocks, Rocky cliff face and reefs where the original Aboriginal inhabitants fished for whiting.
Whether this was the Mooroo as well as the Whadjug has not been resolved by historians. The name in an Aboriginal dialect means 'place to catch whiting'. The spelling was Moodoorup in 1901, Mooderup in 1903/9 and Mudurup today.
In 1960 a groyne was built out from the rocks to prevent erosion of the beaches to the north, 1961 the Surf lifesaving Club was built on the cliffs.
1969 an oceanarium was operating and a second groyne built.
1970 the caves were filled in with rocks and concrete as they were dangerous.
1971 a lookout tower was built
1985 restoration of the area was undertaken by Dept of Conservation and Land Management
1988 the Bi-centennial sundial was planned and landscaping the area began. Sundial designed by Geoff Considine of Considine and Griffiths. The mathematical detail was supplied by Dr Houley of Curtin University. David Gill built the prototype.
