The stone farmhouse has high historic and social significance as a substantial example of one of the
early farming properties that followed the pastoral lease period.
The main fabric of the farmhouse is just holding together, it is probably just too late to be able to save it from total
collapse, although keeping stock out and re-roofing would extend its life.
The stone farmhouse has 3 large rooms across the front facing south towards Geraldton. There is a low lean-to
over rooms to the rear and ruins of stone outbuildings. Internal walls are plastered and ceilings are flat Tongue &
Groove (T & G) boarding. The main roof is CGI, hipped over the 3 front rooms extending down over a hipped
verandah at the front and straight lean to across the rear. The external stone walls at the front have been partially
rendered and marked with coursing.
The farmhouse is on a farming property originally settled by the first wave of farmers taking up land after the
original pastoral properties were sub-divided. Blacksmith and farrier William Mercy (1822-1887) lived at Mugawa
and it is possible that the property was occupied during the 1860s.
Annette Sellers advised that Mr Charleton Teakle provided the following information during the Northampton
Heritage Weekend held in 2000. "At first glance this picturesque building appears to be a farm building, and for
most of the 1900's before falling into disrepair, it was a farm labourers cottage. However, it too is a mining era
building, probably dating back to the 1870's when it had a shingle roof and Mercy's operated a blacksmith shop.
This was needed by the teams carting lead from the mines to Champion Bay (Geraldton)".
