129-133 Throssell Street, Collie a single storey brick and tile motel and restaurant development is not considered to have heritage significance.
It was included on the 1996 Shire of Collie Municipal Heritage Inventory and the record has been retained for information purposes only.
The site is located over four lots. The restaurant is painted brick with a low pitched hipped roofed, with a steel parapet. A brick firewall divides the restaurant on the street front from the adjacent building (125 Throssell St). The two storey motel is set further back from the road and has a hipped tiled roof and steel balcony balustrades.
The Collie Motel is located over four lots on Throssell Street, Collie. Henri’s Restaurant occupies part of Lot 124 at the eastern edge of the site on Throssell Street.
Prior to the change in the numbering of places on Throssell Street, the site comprised 75 – 83 Throssell Street.
Street names were not included in the Post Office Directories for Collie until 1934. At that time, 75 Throssell Street was occupied by H Barnes, followed by W Hancock, printer in 1935. In 1938, a butcher, Ern Clayton is listed. There are no further specific listings at the address.
In 1934, Hancock the printer is listed at 76 Throssell Street. From 1935 to 1937, both E Clayton, and William H Stephens, tobacconist and hairdresser are listed. From 1938 to 1941 only Stephens is listed at the address. There are no further specific listings at the address.
There are no listings for 78 Throssell Street.
From 1936 to 1949 when the Post Office Directory records cease, GJ Brennan’s store is listed at 79 Throssell Street.
Corot & Co frocks and millinery is listed at 80 Throssell Street from 1934 until 1938. From 1939 Corot & Co is listed at 60 Throssell Street.
From 1940, Smith and Co, furniture dealers was listed at the address. They are still at the address in 1949 by which time they are listed as drapers and furniture dealers. In 1940, William Smith and Co Ltd of Hay Street, Perth advertise that they have a number of branches including one at Collie.
81 Throssell Street is occupied by Syd Proffitt, sadler from at least 1934 until 1944.
There is no specific listing for 82 Throssell Street.
In 1935 HG Stacey is listed at 83 Throssell Street, followed by Mrs A Scott in 1936 and Mrs EJ Scott in 1937. In 1938 and 1939 Edwin J Scott, butcher is listed. By 1940 and until at least 1947, Mr Scott and then Mrs Scott operate a boarding house from the place. In 1949, T Griffiths is listed at the address.
Around 1966 the motel was constructed as part of the Auto Motels chain.
Henri’s Restaurant is located on the north western corner of the site addressing Throssell Street. It is likely that the restaurant was constructed at the same time as the motel. The restaurant is named for the motel’s manager during the 1980s and 1990s, Henri Williams.
In 2016, the restaurant and motel continue to operate.
