Statement of Significance
The place has significant associations with the Acklands, a local identity family and early settlement of the region.
Physical Description
A three room mud bat house.
History
JB (John Barnes) Ackland (1856) came from South Australia , and was a JP in Northam in 1904. In 1905, he selected land north of Goomalling. One of JB's sons, JH (John Hughes) took over the selected land, and together with his brother Roy, moved to the selection at Lake Ninan in 1908. JB & his wife moved there when JB retired in 1909, and he died in 1915. JH had previously been apprenticed to Wilding at Mokine, a leading farmer and pastoralist at the time. JB was the inaugural secretary of the Progress Association. JH married Miss Coomer in 1915, and went to war, returning to hold office of Roads Board chairman for 17 years. He was Captain of the VDC during World War Two, and in charge of the Cadoux Training. Tragically JH collapsed and died during the opening ceremony for the new Wongan Hills Junior High School in 1953. RRB (Royston Randell Barnes) Ackland was the older brother of JH, he selected land in 1905, but a survey error resulted in a 1500 acre advantage to Ackland, and included land with the Aboriginal soak: Moonagarrin, which became the name of the property. RRB chaired the Co-op and the Agricultural Society and was on the Wongan-Ballidu Roads Board. His first son was John Barnes junior (JB), and his second son Boyd AH Ackland. The Ackland's home was the social and community centre for the Lake Ninan settlers. The first local resident minister in the Wongan Hills area was Reverend Mearing. Together with the Lake Ninan schoolteacher and a local farmer, he formed an orchestra. Winter evening services were sparse in numbers, and the hall was cold, so to create more interest, the first Sunday of the month was a special event. A Musicale and service were held at the Ackland's home, and cars transported the congregation from Wongan Hills. Supper was enjoyed afterwards- everyone went. The debating club was formed at such an occasion. Later the services were held at Ganzers, until the church was built in Wongan Hills.
