Statement of Significance

House, 22 Trafford Street, is a single storey limestone and zincalume house dating from 1914. The place has aesthetic value for its contribution to the streetscape and the surrounding area. It is representative of the typical building stock located within the residential areas of Fremantle. It is historically significant as a representation of typical workers' houses in the Fremantle area. The place is a late example of the Victorian Georgian style of architecture. The place has undergone alterations but original form remains intact.

Physical Description

House, 22 Trafford Street is a single storey, limestone and zincalume house designed as an example of the Victorian Georgian style of architecture. The walls are limestone with rendered quoining. The roof is hipped and clad with zincalume. The façade is symmetrical with a central front door with top and side fanlights flanked on either side by timber framed double hung sash windows. The verandah has a separate dropped zincalume roof supported by posts. Decorative vents are visible between the roof and verandah. There is a steel and zincalume carport to the front of the house, and a rendered wall with horizontal steel bars at the front boundary line.

History

The land on which house 22 Trafford Street stands was vacant in 1909/10 and owned by William Payne Birmingham and Mathew Lewis Moss. Birmingham and Moss owned the vacant land until 1914 when Frederick Richard Webb became the owner. A cottage was being built on the 30 March 1914 and Webb was the occupant. By 1920/21, Edgar Jennings was the owner/occupier and by 1940/41 ownership had changed to Thomas and Alice Guideria.

The house was originally number 23 and changed to 22 c. 1935/36. The house is on Lot 28 and was known as subdivision 28 of 37 of Cockburn Sound Location 7.
