Statement of Significance
The Swan Building Society was formed in 1895 and was an important institution supported by many noted Guildford people including W.G. Johnson who was made first President and Trustee of the Society. The building forms part of the remnant building stock which make up the historic town's fabric.
Physical Description
A single-storey brick and tile commercial building with an Art Deco style façade built in 1930s. More recent additions have been made to the western section of the building and are in keeping with the original style.
History
The original Swan Building Society business was conducted from the Devenish premises including 138 Swan Street, rear of the Town Hall, 187 James Street and from 1937 at the purpose built building at 215 James Street. The Society's Presidents over the years included W.G. Johnson - flour mill, GJC Gill - store keeper, J S Milhe - baker/pastry cook, C Ta Hersal - office worker Douglas Jones, A H Kingsbury - builder, T Camick - builder, L Gibbon - Town Clerk, L C Lonson - printer. The Society remained in operation until the late 1980s. A 'time capsule' is believed to be within a safe once used by the Society, and is located somewhere in the building.
