Brookton Post Office is a fine example of Post War architecture and informs of the prosperous period of the mid 1950s,
mirroring the Brookton Town Hall that was re-developed in the same period. Associations with J Tyrer’s 41 years of
postal delivery service from 1917, and Postmaster Dick Crameri’s 37 years, is significant.
The single storey building features a concrete edge to the side walls and roof, protruding beyond the
front wall with a further recessed portico beyond a face brick surround on one end of the front. The remainder of the
frontage has a rhythm of equal spaced vertical blades with glazed and roughcast panels between.
The original house is located behind the Post office.
Brookton’s first postal service was in 1871, and ended in 1873. After services being re-established by various means,
in 1907 land was allocated for the new post office in Robinson Road. The original post office on this site was opened in
1910. It is not known when or why it was demolished and replaced. By 1912 it also had the phone exchange. J Tyrer
commenced mail deliveries in 1917 and continued for 41 years until the new post office was constructed. From 1954
Dick Crameri worked at the post office, predominantly as Postmaster during his service, retiring in 1991.
