History

The tavern project was an initiative of the local community who formed a consortium called Lake King Developments after a public meeting to investigate the feasibility of establishing a tavern/service station/motel in Lake King. After considerable lobbying, lots 164, 165, 166 on Varley Road were released by the government on the condition that no power or water would be supplied. The tavern site was also dependant on attaining a liquor license. The license application was rejected in 1984, a final decision by the Licensing Court, and the Lands Department demanded the land back. A petition was organised to the Premier, and after considerable government lobbying, the licence application was reheard in 1985 and granted. Construction began on the water supply dam, supervised by the PWD, and the LKD and the Progress Association joined forces to have the dam converted to a town supply (not just the tavern).
In October 1987, the Premier Brian Burke opened the Lake King Tavern in front of a crowd of several hundred people. Chairman of Lake King Developments, Ian Brandenburg, officiated at the opening, the Minister for water Resources, Ernie Bridge, turned on the lake King Water supply on the same day. By the time the tavern was almost complete, the adjacent 8 unit motel was almost complete.
