Built in 1906 as the Commercial Hotel, the building is still used today. It was the first two storey brick
structure in Ravensthorpe and was buill for Mr Charles Farbar Brown. In 1914 the hole! was closed due to the
decline in mining. In 1916 it was purchased by Mr Francis A Fallows, in I92S it was dclicensed and from
then on it was used as a boarding house, fruit and vegetable shop and barber's shop. In 1947 it was purchased
by the Phillips River Masonic Lodge and used as a venue for receptions, billiards competitions, cub and scout
groups, kindergarten, CWA, youth groups, museum, NSW Bank, Opportunity Shop and Shire Health and
Building Office until restoration to its former glory began in 1989.
It was officially reopened in 1993 as the Ravensthorpe Community Centre.
The foundations arc a 3fi bed oi stone with light mortar to allow for slight movement. The damp course is of
tar and hemp. Bricks were made locally by Parker and Brady at the kiln west of Floater Road near the Old
Newdegate Road. Jarrah for downstairs floors, pine and oregon for upstairs floors and rafters, stamp metal
ceiling and iron roof were brought by sea via Hopetoun and thence by horse or donkey teams on wagons.
