Very early mention of Lancelin. The first white man to die here as far as we know. He is related to two very significant people. The Nambung river (in Nambung National Park) was originally named Smith River by Grey when Smith was in their expedition party.
The body of Frederick Smith (1821 - 1839) is buried here. He was a graphic artist and cousin of Florence Nightingale. He was also cousin to the Rev. Charles Nicolay, the founder of W_A.'s first Museum. He perished en route from Kalbarri to Perth . His body was found near the beach about two miles south of Lancelin by Roe and two members of his party, Private Kinchela & Warrup (an Aboriginal guide). Roe later told George Gray how nearby they found his journal, tinder steel and gun screw and a small bag containing thread, needles and a button. To use Roe's own words, "with the help of the soldier and Warrup, we made a grave with our hands and buried poor Smith deep in a sand hill near the shore and pursued our melancholy way."
