The buildings at Irwin Park have high historic significance given their connection to the Burges family and the establishment of agriculture in the Irwin District. The place is visible from the Midlands Road and as such adds to the historic character of the district. The two buildings form a substantial dwelling and are set in an attractive location.
RECOMMENDATION
Given the high historic significance of Irwin Park and its close proximity to the former Yardarino School, every effort should be made to preserve and restore these buildings. If the owner cannot do so, but would be willing to sell, investigations for a subdivision and sale should be considered.
This house consists of two structures which are set closely together. The main house has a corrugated iron hipped and gable roof, the latter extends to cover the main front room. The gable end is enclosed with timber boards. The windows to the main room have been removed. The stone walls have brick quoins to the openings and corners. Two brick chimneys punctuate the apex of the gable roof. There is evidence of a front verandah to the side of the main room. The timber floors and some of the joinery of this building have been removed. Located immediately to the rear of this house is a second structure, possibly an original house or quarters. It is constructed of rendered stone with rendered quoins to openings. There is a verandah which is supported on timber posts to the west. Windows are timber framed and double hung. There is a small concrete block and brick addition to the east. There is an avenue of large river gums to the east of the homestead.
The location on which Irwin Park stands was originally part of the Cattle Company's lease. David and Sussan Brand lived here in the 1890s and it is believed that they built the rear house. In 1906, the property was owned by Mrs Scroope (widow of Francis Burges) and Mr O'Halloran and was leased to the McAuliffe Brothers. The property passed to Irwin C. Burges who built the front house in c.1920 when he married Olive Burt. A new house was built on the hill to the east by Francis Burges and the owners moved there. The old house subsequently fell into disrepair with the floor boards being used in the shearing shed and the front windows going to Tyford (Place No. 98). [1]
The stone house built in the 1890s has been referred to as "Irwin View".[2]
