Statement of Significance

The cemetery is an important site for the Wagin community providing a link with past citizens.

Physical Description

The cemetery is located on the western outskirts of the townsite of Wagin. The Cemetery has vehicular access off Arthur Road.

History

The Wagin cemetery was established in 1898. Some of the early graves include: Robert Watson, died March 1902; Richard Spratt, died 1905; Edwin Sprigg, died 1907; and Robert Watson, died March 1902.1
The first meeting of the trustees of the Wagin Public Cemetery was held on 18 October 1905.2
The Cemetery Board could not afford to maintain the cemetery grounds and was of the view that the Wagin Council cojld nanage the cemetery better than they.3 As the cemetery was outside the municipal boundaries an opinion The Wagin cemetery was established in 1898. The Colonial Secretary advised that this was in order and the cemetery was transferred to the Council in 1909.4
Recommendations for the allotment of areas for various denominations were made in 1906.5 The tenders were called in 1906 for the position of grave digger.6
