The pumping station was built in 1962. It was required to pump water into the main irrigation channel as the dam level fell. This was necessary prior to the construction of the Top Dam (Argyle Dam). The pumping station is now not needed . It was the site used for mooring the catamarans which ferried many tourists around Lake Kununurra. Local people also swam there, but this is now strongly discouraged for safety reasons.
The main pumping station was built on the town side bank of the Ord River about three kilometres upstream from the Diversion Dam. A caravan park has now been developed alongside. It is adjacent to the Main Channel (Ml) which took water to the irrigation system across the Weber Plain. The station was built of concrete and galvanized iron. It remains in good condition today despite not being used.
