History

During the 1930s the Agricultural Adviser was based in Katanning, making visits to the Lakes area. Field days were held about once a year in each district, but were very well attended for farmers to be informed of new techniques and technology. Up to 1939, sheep demonstrations were held at Jack Harvey's stud flock at 'Ormidale', conducted by the Agriculture Department's (Perth) sheep expert, Hugh McCallum. In the 1940s investigations were taking place into the use of copper and zinc in wheat growing. In 1941 CH Lucas of Lake Grace reported a positive response to blue stone(Copper sulphate). In 1947 the Lake Grace Roads Board asked the Department of Agriculture to conduct experiments for the development of light land (trace elements). The experiments took place on D Elliott's property south of Lake Grace. The experiments supervised by Dr TC Dunne (later Director of Agriculture) and Mr FL Shire, resulted in the opening of large areas of light land in the Lake Grace District in the 1950s and 1960s and the Research Station in 1955. After 3 years of visits by George Halpin from Katanning, Peter Nelson, from the Katanning office, moved to Lake Grace in 1964, and worked from his house. The first stage of the district office was opened by the Minister for Agriculture, CD Nalder, on 20 July 1967. The existing staff were assisted by the addition of a Landcare officer in 1990.
