Coal Machinery Memorial – Ruston Bucyrus, 156 Throssell Street, Collie (Visitor Centre) has cultural heritage significance for the following reasons:
• Machinery like the Ruston Bucyrus was essential to the Collie mining industry (Hocking)
Ruston Bucyrus is a mechanical shovel excavator from the 1960's and was used in Collie. It forms part of the Railway Museum display.
Signage at the Collie Tourist Bureau describes the Ruston Bucyrus Mechanical Shovel as follows:
54RB MECHANICAL SHOVEL
The 54 Ruston Bucyrus (RB) excavator was purchased by Griffin Coal in September 1961 and worked in excess of 38,000 hours in the Collie Coalfields during which time it moved approximately 9 million tonnes of coal.
It was donated to the Collie Community by the Griffin Coal Mining Company in 1977. The original 4.5 tonne bucket is still attached.
This machine was buried under sand in an accident in 1964. Luckily, the driver was on his crib break. Another employee burrowed his way down into the sand and shut the machine off.
