This place was identified in the "Hilton Residential Development Policy and Urban Design Guidelines" prepared by the City of Fremantle, and adopted by Council on 19/9/1994.
AUSTRIAN HOUSES - In the late 1940s the urgent need for accommodation led to the State Housing Commission to enter into an agreement with an overseas company to supply pre-cut homes for Western Australia. A contract was signed on 6 December 1950 with Thermo Units Ltd of London in Association with Thermobau of Austria, to supply 900 timber framed houses. A local building company, Messrs Sandwell and Wood Pty Ltd of West Perth, organised the building program with the assistance of Austrian tradesmen. These men were selected by Thermobau of Vienna, and had to satisfy the following requirements: a) To be competent tradesmen, ie. bricklayers, carpenters, etc. b) Hold a trade union membership ticket or possess a diploma showing they had served an apprenticeship in their particular trade. c) be medically fit, d) provide their own tools, and e) sign a two year contract with the State Housing Commission After selection they were thoroughly screened by representatives of the Australian Mi
