The site represents associations with the settlers in the Elgin area, and a means of communication and socialising.
The phone exchange and post office was originally located at Vickery's, and later at Jilley's, near the railway siding which was convenient to collect the mail and sort. It provided a central location for the Elgin settlers to collect the mail and socialise. Later it moved to Reid's at The Bridge'.
