Statement of Significance

Significant tragic event which pays tribute to the service of pioneers in the remote Kimberley region of Western Australia. In this case the staff of the Flying Doctor Service and also the resident sof remote stations.

History

In February 1956, a plane with the flying Doctor Service (an Avro Ansen) crashed at Hawkstone Peak during a violent tropical storm whilst flying from Tableland Station. The pilot , two nurses and the male passenger and his sick baby all perished. A memorial plaque has been erected to their memory at Derby Airport.
