Statement of Significance
The place is significant as the only billiard saloon in Capel, and the bakery since the 1950's. It has a sense of place for many Capel people for the social interaction that has taken place there. It makes a significant contribution to the mainstreet streetscape in Capel and the charater and townscape identity.
Physical Description
Timber framed and weatherboard and asbestos clad with a hipped corrugated iron roof and a break pitch skillion verandah along the street frontage. The verandah is supported by square timber posts.
History
Mr Solomon who ran the barber shop, was granted a license to become a Billiard Parlour. In the 1930's and 1940's Bert Warn ran the place as a billiard saloon with barbers shop and confectionary store. During the 1950's and 1960's Bates operated the Baker's Shop. He used the bakery on site at the original bakery over the road next to the Roads Board Office. In 1959, Bates made some alterations to the place (building license application).
