Statement of Significance

Notable as a very early settlement site in the Williams area and the original selector Michael Quinn
was a prominent citizen in the district for many years (1860-1903).

Physical Description

Located approx 12 kms SE of Williams about 2 kms south of Glenfield Road.

History

Michael, in partnership with his brother William, established themselves on tillage and pastoral
leases in this area in 1860. In 1867 they made application to purchase Williams Location 20 which
included Undergeen Spring. This block of 47 acres was surveyed in 1867. (1) Michael Quinn was
obviously well established by this time for in 1863 he was awarded the contract to supply the police
stations at 36 mile, Bannister and 125 mile stations with hay at £8 pounds per ton, and in 1864 the
contract to supply barley. (4/6 per bushel). (2)
Quinn was one of the seven original Roads Board members elected in 1871. (3) In 1898 his wife
laid the foundation stone for the Agricultural Hall in Williams.
Quinn also had a number of holdings to the SE including "Ballagin".
Quinn disposed of Glenfield in 1903 to Warden Hicks of Kalgoorlie. (4) In subsequent years the
property changed ownership many times. In more recent times the property has been owned by the
Fawcett family. Among their enterprises on the farm was an Aberdeen Angus Cattle Stud.
