Buildings, which due to their character create the atmosphere of Peppermint Grove, therefore should be retained, but may be altered and extended in a manner which is both discrete and sympathetic to the original fabric and character so that a significant proportion of the original building is retained and from the street the additions are seen to be a continuation of the same fabric and character.

Statement of Significance

This single storey limestone and tiled roofed residence, in
Victorian Late Georgian bungalow style, has cultural
significance because:
it is the first permanent residence in the suburb;
it has historical association with William Sayer, a
Solicitor-General and Crown Solicitor, in the pre and
post Federation periods;
it reflects the start of the suburb's association with
important members of the legal profession;
it is part of a cultural group and a townscape area

Physical Description

The place is constructed in a style consistent with the very
early Gold Boom development period, before Federation styles
became the norm. The style is most consistent with Late
Colonial Georgian house patterns, although the dominant roof
form makes it more akin to early Georgian building forms.

History

The bungalow is believed to be the first permanent residence in
Peppermint Grove. William Sayer held a number of senior
legal positions, including Secretary to the Law Department,
Commissioner for Titles, Attorney General, Parliamentary
Draftsman, Crown Solicitor and, between 1902 and 1904, he
was Solicitor-General. Sayer purchased twelve blocks from
the Peppermint Grove syndicate. Sayer was a valued member
of the Peppermint Grove community. Considerable historical
significance.

Integrity/Authenticity

The place retains a moderatelhigh level of integrity.
Tiles may have replaced an iron roof and verandah
Single profile of roof and verandah may have replaced an
earlier profile of separate roof and verandah, Verandah floor
has been replaced. Recent additions.
