Statement of Significance

The hall is of considerable significance in representing the community of Doodenanning. It demonstrates a close association with the pioneers and settlers of the Doodenanning area. The continuity of use is significant in demonstrating the changing ways of life in the rural community.

Physical Description

Timber framed and weatherboard clad hall with a gable roof of corrugated iron.

History

Prior to the existing hall, a bag hall was the centre of the community social life, with the sports ground close by, many sports days ended with a dance in the hall. In 1912, a public meeting called for a new hall. The community commenced fundraising with a number of functions, and paid for the new hall which was finished by the time the men returned from World War One in 1918. The hall was the centre of the social, religious, community and family celebrations of the surrounding community. Dances, church services, weddings, birthdays, fund raising events and other community functions took place at the hall. Aubrey Pettit would play his accordion at the dances, sometimes twice a week, and often "Jock" Louden entertained by singing. The hall is still used by the active community in Doodenanning. The tennis courts are in close proximity to the hall, and the hall is the club rooms, as it is for the golf club, also in close proximity.
