The bridge was built in 1864 by convict labour. It was re-decked in 1902 and a railing wa added. It was demolished in the 1980s. The mud bat buildings, constructed early in 1870, were used as a store, a wheelwright, carpenter and shoemaker. They fell into disuse when the railway opened up in Beverley in 1886.
Before the railway opened up a new route, the top road passed by St Paul's Church and then on into the eastern areas of Beverley on the east side of the river. It was thus a good position to locate a business.
