The sundial was Cottesloe's Bi-Centennial project and is also probably one of the largest sundials to be
constructed in the Southern Hemisphere. It has become a landmark.
Bi-centennial Memorial Sundial, The sundial was the outcome of a design and ideas competition as part
of Cottesloe's contribution to the Bi-Centennial commemorating the founding of the colonies on the east
coast of Australia. It was made by largely voluntary or at cost contributions and built over a protracted
period. The astrological data was provided by Dr Tony Hooley of Curtin University and developed into a
design by Geoff Considine of Considine and Griffiths. The inspiration was the Junta Manta, Jaipur. David
Gill built the prototype.
The sundial won the 1995 Civic Design Award for Considine and Griffiths Architects.
