Statement of Significance

St Andrew's Anglican Church has aesthetic, historic and social heritage significance. As the oldest church in
the City of Nedlands, it has a long history of providing a home to the religious needs of the early inhabitants
of Nedlands. Though extensions in 1958 have compromised the early design, the Churca still has
architectural and landscape features valued by the comrnunity.

History

This church was built in 1912/13 to replace a timber building destroyed by fire earlier in the year, On the
opposite side of Stirling Highway. The present (199S) fabric includes t 956 and c 1983 additions, The original
east-west oriented structure comprised a red brick: building with the three windows on the east wall behind the
altar. The tiled roof is lined with timber boarding, all executed in the Gothic idiom.

The 1956 addition was built along the west end and at right angles to the Inchoate structure forming the top of
a'T'. It is partitioned from the original building and is a Slightly larger building with the altar on [he concave
(from inside) north wall. The main walls are salmon brick, and the roof. although tiled. is a much flatter pitch
than the Gothic.

The Fonner nave has been converted Into a meeting room with a kitchen annexe under a lean-to tiled roof
along the north side. Additions executed in red brick are now evident as additional facilities. with a courtyard
wall along Stirling Highway frontage screening the southern entrance to the Church.

Interim fabric from the 1956 addition ma.y have social significance but tends to negate the potential of the
whole complex due to its disunifying influence.
