Statement of Significance

Brookton Uniting Church represents the establishment of the Methodist Church in Brookton in c.1909, and continued place of worship and sense of place for the occasions and events that have taken place.

Physical Description

The double volume single storey church has a gabled parapet frontage with a central gabled porch. The entire frontage is painted and symmetrical with a decorative stepped gable apex with a cross atop. The sidewalls have stepped buttresses equal along each side. The walls are face brick with rendered reveals and sills to the Gothic stained glass windows. There is a brick addition at the rear with similar stepped buttresses, and the roof is low pitched.

History

The first meeting of the Methodist Church building committee was in October 1907, with some influential citizens of the time. Rev RR Fleming travelled from Beverley for the Brookton services, establishing a friendship with WM Crawford during stays at Milroy. The committee was yet to build a church, and when it was built it was already 2/3 paid for. Mr
Rossiter’s tender was accepted, on proviso that the committee supplied the bricks. The Church opened on 11 April 1909. The committee subsequently became the Church trustees. Although it was agreed in 1914 to build a manse, it did not proceed. The Independent Order of Oddfellows, the Band of Hope, and the local debating team also utilised the church as their venue. In 1977, Methodists, Presbyterians and Congregational churches formed the Uniting Church.
