Statement of Significance

The former Dongara School building has historic significance for its connection to the development of education in the district for over 66 years. The building also has social significance being the place where the community newspaper is produced. The building is representative of simple small rural school buildings from the turn of the century and forms an important part of the heritage precinct at the intersection of Waldeck Street and Moreton Terrace.

Physical Description

Situated on a prominent corner location, this is a two room school constructed of painted brick on a limestone foundation. The gable corrugated iron roof is steeply pitched and extends to form a rear (north) verandah. The verandah is partially enclosed at each corner with weatherboard and fibro sheets and is supported on metal poles at the centre. There are air vents inset below the apex of the gable ends, with three cylindrical metal air vents to the roof. The windows to the south facade are timber framed pivot style. Original window openings to the west have been bricked in. There is a corbelled brick chimney.

History

This was the second school built in Dongara and was opened in 1906. It was used until 1972 when the third and current school was opened. The Dongara Pottery Club presently occupies one room and the other is used to produce the 'Dongara Rag', the community newspaper. The building was reroofed in the early 1990s.
