Statement of Significance

The place represents the development of the sporting facilities in the town, and demonstrates associations with early settlers and sporting identities. Memorial Drive commemorates a way of life and pays respect to the pioneers of the district.

Physical Description

Dark brown coloured face brick rick construction with a low pitch tiled gable roof. The pavilion building has a verandah under the main roof along the entire frontage overlooking the oval. Brick piers support the verandah roof.

History

At the 2nd meeting of the reformed Varley Progress Association in 1965, it was decided to request land for a golf links and football ground. The resulting recreation ground was surveyed in 1966, and the farmers volunteered their labour to grade the oval. The grounds were the home ground for the newly inaugurated Football Association. Lake Varley farmed their own team for the first time, and played under a number of different associations over the next few years. The Progress Association together with other sporting and general associations provided the pavilion. Prior to the pavilion the facilities were a corrugated iron afternoon tea shed and change rooms, with toilets in the bush. In 1978 the playgroup also operated from the pavilion. In 1994 the Bowling club addition was made to the building, and a green was constructed. The Memorial Drive remembers and honours the original settlers of the region It was the initiative of the existing Varley district community, and was officially opened by Wilson Tuckey Federal MLA.
