Statement of Significance

This very handsome building contributes a great deal to the street and compliments perfectly its neighbour, the Commercial Bank, both of which were built in the 1890's. The building has therefore been classified for architectural reasons as well as for its part in the streetscape of High St.

Physical Description

A two storeyed non-symmetrical building used by the Australian Government for offices. It has a rough stone foundation, horizontal shadow lines at street level and stucco ornamentation to the upper level including a dentil cornice, a balustrade parapet and a ornate pediment above the entrance. The upper level is recessed back from the building line to form a balcony.
