Statement of Significance

The Marvel Loch School has aesthetic, historic and social significance.
The Marvel Loch township grew up after the first mine in the area was opened in 1900. It was first called Turnbulls, and it later became first Lady Loch and then Jacoletti. The Marvel Loch mine and the Mountain Queen mine, owned by a London company, led to further interest in the area. A Progress Association was formed and at their instigation the town was surveyed with a central reserve for a school. The Progress Association built the first school with the understanding that the Education Department would supply a teacher and the necessary desks, and when finances permitted, build a school. The original school was a typical building of the day, with bush poles, lime washed hessian walls and an iron roof. The town was going ahead and by 1911 school attendance was growing, resulting in the building of the Trig school1 in 1911.
When the Marvel Loch School was unable to accommodate the increasing number of students in the 1950s, the old Troy School building was transferred to the location to provide another classroom.

Physical Description

The Marvel Loch School consists of two buildings. The one, built in 1911, is weatherboard and brick with a corrugated iron roof and tall timber framed windows. It also has a brick chimney. It replaced the original wattle and daub school. The other building (the old Troy School), built of weatherboard and asbestos with a corrugated iron roof, was moved in the 1950s and is now set in pleasantly landscaped gardens. Nearby in the same complex is the former headmaster's house.
