Economical/social/historical/architectural
(a) Station: Long timber frame building with jarrah weatherboard cladding and t.c. tiled gable roof which extends on each side to form a verandah supported on wooden posts and covering the station platform on one side and the goods delivery platform on the other. A small matching roof forms a porch at each end. The ends of these verandah roofs are closed by vertical boarding with a saw-toothed bottom edge, typical of railway buildings of the period, and also feature the carved projecting ends of the supporting timber beams. A series of solid wooden doors and doublehung wooden sash windows open onto the platform and the street front from the row of rooms and offices. Two brick corbelled chimneys with single terracotta pots project through the ridge.
(b) Station Master’s Office: Timber frame building with corrugated iron gable roof and weatherboard clad walls up to sill height with rough cast cement rendering above. The gable end to the street has a small half timbered section at the top and a small flat roof over a projecting window bay. A substantial entry porch occupies the south-east corner of the building and features double timber supporting posts linked at the top by a decorative wooden detail and has two sets of doors opening onto it.
(C) Station Master’s House: Substantial brick house with corrugated iron hipped roof extending over a full width front verandah supported in wooden posts and a skillion roof to rear. The central panelled front door has top and side lights and is flanked by two double hung wooden sash windows on each side. The two symmetrically placed tall brick corbelled chimneys are capped with arched covers.
(D) Goods Shed: Large corrugated iron shed on timber framing covering a raised freight handling platform and accessible through large sliding doors to wagons and trucks for loading and unloading under cover. The raised platform is extended outside the shed and supports a crane for freight handling.

The Southwest Railway – the Perth to Bunbury line – was officially opened on September 9th, 1893. This event slowly but surely changed the face of Harvey when buildings sprang up and around the new railway station. The Perth to Bunbury line also assisted in the growth of Harvey ensuring fruit, vegetables and stock could be transported to Perth for sale in a shorter space of time.
Later the station became a busy centre with station houses on both sides of the rail (north of the railway station) and small huts along the rail for the gangers who operated their three wheeled trolleys from Perth through to Bunbury. These gangers inspected the rails for damage and the small huts were used for overnight accommodation.
By 1915 there was a very efficient train service to Harvey, with two passenger trains to Harvey each way daily. The Perth train leaving Harvey at 9:40 a.m. and returning about 9:00 p.m allowed a full afternoon to transact business in Perth. Later, when this service was curtailed, Harvey business people who were forced to travel to the city by road found the excursion very frustrating.
Eric Davis’ history makes mention of Mr. Bill McQuade, who joined the railways at Harvey as a junior before 1914 (SEE Site No. (H/U) 18)
